Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the GEO Schema plugin for WordPress.
GENERAL
About the Plugin
No. This plugin supplements your existing SEO plugin. Yoast handles meta titles, descriptions, XML sitemaps, and basic schema. This plugin adds the specialized schema types, llms.txt, and AI bot management that SEO plugins do not focus on. Both coexist without conflicts. Schema outputs at wp_head priority 2, right alongside Yoast at priority 1.
No. The plugin adds a small JSON-LD block to each page head section — no database writes on the frontend, no external API calls, no JavaScript loaded for visitors. It works with every page cache plugin including WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, LiteSpeed, and WP Rocket.
Search engines and AI merge multiple schema blocks intelligently. Having both Yoast basic schema and GEO Schema enriched schema is better than either alone. If you see duplicate issues, you can use the Replace mode for WooCommerce or adjust your SEO plugin schema settings.
Yes — 100% free, no premium tier, no feature gating. The plugin is built by Citable.dev as the foundational layer for AI visibility. If you want to go deeper, the Citable Score report (a separate paid service at citable.dev) tests how AI actually cites your site across 7 platforms.
Deactivation: Schema output stops, the llms.txt endpoint deactivates, and robots.txt bot rules are removed. All settings and data are preserved — reactivating restores everything. Deletion: All plugin data is cleaned up — settings, per-page meta, schema templates, and transients. This is permanent.
SCHEMA
Schema and Structured Data
JSON-LD is a standardized format for describing your content to machines. When AI search engines process your page, they read this structured data to understand what type of page it is, who your business is, what services you offer, and how to describe you accurately. Without it, AI has to guess — and guesses lead to missed citations or inaccurate recommendations.
The plugin examines your page URL slug, title, and content to determine the right schema type. For example, a page at /about gets AboutPage schema, /faq gets FAQPage, /services gets Service. Pages with 3 or more question-format headings are auto-detected as FAQPage. You can always override the auto-detected type in the editor.
Yes. The Additional Schema Types feature lets you add extra types to any page. For example, a service page with an FAQ section can have both Service and FAQPage schema. Research shows FAQ schema combined with a primary page type is one of the highest-impact combinations for AI citations.
A guided form for building 18 schema.org types — SoftwareApplication, JobPosting, Person, Review, Vehicle, PodcastSeries, and more — without writing any JSON. Every field has help text explaining what it is and why AI cares about it. Required fields are always visible; optional fields are behind a Show All Properties toggle.
Templates let you configure schema once and apply it to many pages. Update the template, and all linked pages update automatically. You can also detach a page to edit it independently. Perfect for agencies and sites with many similar pages like service pages or location pages.
AI VISIBILITY
llms.txt and AI Bots
It is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org) that gives AI crawlers a structured overview of your site — like robots.txt for AI. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI systems can use it to understand your site without parsing all your HTML. The plugin auto-generates it from your settings and pages.
For most businesses: no. Allowing AI crawlers means your content can appear when potential customers ask AI questions. Blocking prevents AI from citing your business. The main reason to block is if you want to prevent content from being used for AI model training — but this often also prevents citation. Default is all allowed.
The plugin automatically detects if Yoast, RankMath, or SEOPress is providing llms.txt and defers — our endpoint is disabled to avoid conflicts. If a static llms.txt file exists in your web root, the plugin also defers. You will see a notice on the llms.txt settings tab explaining what is happening.
Nine major AI crawlers: GPTBot (ChatGPT), Google-Extended (Gemini and AI Overviews), PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot (Anthropic), FacebookBot (Meta AI), Applebot-Extended (Apple Intelligence), CCBot (Common Crawl), Bytespider (TikTok/ByteDance), and cohere-ai. Each has an educational description explaining the trade-off of blocking.
COMPATIBILITY
Technical Questions
Yes. The plugin renders shortcodes via do_shortcode before analyzing content, so word counts, heading counts, and internal link counts work correctly with Avada/Fusion Builder, Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, Beaver Builder, and native WordPress editors (Gutenberg and Classic).
Yes. When WooCommerce is active, the plugin automatically generates rich Product schema on every product page — price, availability, reviews, brand, images, SKU, weight, and GTIN. Supports both simple products (Offer) and variable products (AggregateOffer with price range). You can supplement WooCommerce built-in schema or replace it entirely.
Yes. The plugin activates per-site in a multisite network. Each site has its own settings, schema, and llms.txt.
Use the citable_geo_meta_box_post_types filter in your theme functions.php or a custom plugin. Add your post type slug to the array and the GEO Schema panel will appear in that post type editor.
GEO Readiness is a free on-site checklist built into this plugin — it checks your schema configuration and basic setup. The full Citable Score (available at citable.dev) tests how AI actually cites your site across 7 platforms including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Copilot, Meta AI, and Apple Intelligence.
