METHODOLOGY
How We Score AI Visibility
The Citable Score™ measures how likely AI search engines are to find, understand, and recommend your business. Six categories. Seven platforms. One number that tells you where you stand.
Why a New Metric?
Traditional SEO tools measure how well you rank on Google. But when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, Google rankings are almost irrelevant — only 12% of URLs cited by AI search engines rank in Google’s top 10 for the same query.
AI-referred traffic grew 527% year-over-year in early 2025. Google AI Overviews reach 1.5 billion users monthly. The gap between SEO performance and AI visibility is real, measurable, and growing. The Citable Score was built to measure it.
SCORING FRAMEWORK
The Six Categories
Each audit evaluates your website across six dimensions. The weights reflect the strength of research evidence behind each signal and its role in how AI systems actually select sources to cite.
30%
AI Citability & Visibility
Can AI systems find your content, extract answers, and cite it? Pages structured in 120–180 word sections with answer-first formatting receive 70% more AI citations. Content with statistics improves visibility by 38%.
18%
Entity Recognition & Brand Authority
Does AI know your brand exists? Wikipedia accounts for 47.9% of ChatGPT’s top citations. Web mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.664 — three times stronger than backlinks.
22%
Content Quality & E-E-A-T
Is your content authoritative enough to cite correctly? AI cites wrong sources 41% of the time. Comprehensive, well-structured content with clear expertise signals gives AI the context it needs.
15%
Technical Foundations
Can AI crawlers access your site? Publication dates shift AI rankings by up to 95 positions — even when content is identical. Covers crawlability, Core Web Vitals, recency signals, and indexability.
7%
Schema & Structured Data
Can machines understand what your business is? Microsoft confirmed schema helps its LLMs. GPT-4 accuracy jumps from 16% to 54% with structured data. Evaluates JSON-LD, FAQPage, sameAs links.
8%
Platform Readiness
86% of top-cited sources are unique to one platform. What ChatGPT trusts differs from Perplexity or Gemini. Measures readiness across all seven AI platforms we evaluate.
THE AI CITATION PIPELINE
How AI Selects Sources
Every AI search response follows a five-stage pipeline. Each stage maps to the scoring dimensions above.
01
Retrieve
Search the index for candidates. If your content isn’t crawlable, it can’t be found.
02
Rerank
A reasoning model evaluates whether each candidate actually answers the question.
03
Select a Set
Pick complementary sources. Redundant content is dropped. Unique angles get selected.
04
Generate & Cite
Draft the answer, then attach citations to specific claims from the selected sources.
05
Validate
Check citations against sources. Validation now approaches human-level accuracy.
SCORE TIERS
Where Do You Fall?
90–100 Leading — AI platforms actively cite your business.

60–74 Competitive — Some AI visibility but significant opportunities missed.
40–59 Emerging — Major gaps. Most businesses land here.
0–39 Developing — Effectively invisible to AI search.
The average score across our audits is 49 out of 100 — squarely in the Poor tier. Most businesses have strong Google presence paired with weak AI visibility.
The report classifies every finding by severity (Critical, High, Medium, Low) and delivers a prioritized action plan: Quick Wins for this week, Medium-Term for 30 days, and Strategic for 90 days.

RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The scoring methodology draws on 36 sources including peer-reviewed research from Nature (2026), ACM SIGKDD (2024), ACL (2025), ICML (2025), ICLR (2025), and SIGIR-AP (2025), alongside large-scale industry studies from Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking, and platform data from Cloudflare, Microsoft, and Yext.
Where evidence is strong, we weight accordingly. Where it’s emerging, we score conservatively. The model is versioned and updated as new research emerges.
